The Canku Page
What is a Canku?
A Canku is a poem with:
- A title of up to ten words
- Three lines, totalling 17 syllables.
How Does it Differ from a Haiku?
- It has that title
- The 17 syllables can be distributed any way the poet wants (you can even have a line with only one syllable!)
The cankus below generally follow these rules. They are all copyright to the authors.
A Sequence of Cankus
Properly, a canku has only the 17 syllables and the (up to) 10-word title, but in the same way that people make a longer poem out of a series of smaller poems (haikus or even limericks, for example), a series of thematically-linked cankus is not only possible, but encouraged.
First devised in northern Manitoba, such a sequence is called a Hobbsian Set. Where a debate between poets is involved, the set is called a Flonflin.
